From Praise to Fury: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Release is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials defended the redactions with intense hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately called for increased openness.

“The public are furious and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, today’s file dump grossly does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.

Some Rightwing Commentators Swing Behind the Release

But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the administration.

The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces obscured.

But a few are not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.

“This is quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Response

Clinton has consistently said he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been hiding these documents for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Commentary Remains Subdued

However, overall comment on the political right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for action that came before the legislative vote to pass a bill mandating the files' publication.

The commentator, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal advocates for a full disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a set of conservative personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained no new data.
